About
us
Women in Journalism is a not-for-profit organisation which was formed to promote the interests of women working in print journalism
Since modest beginnings in 1995, the organisation has flourished and now has nearly 500 members, ranging from those setting out in their careers to some of the most senior and prominent women in today’s media.
WIJ has developed three main strands; education/research, a campaigning wing and a lively social and networking aspect.
Research projects - all of which have received media coverage – include a detailed analysis of the ways in which gender determines news coverage; the ratio of women to men in policy and decision-making roles on national newspapers, and the first comprehensive national survey of journalists’ salaries.
The bi-monthly seminars, held in a central London location, have been hugely successful. Topics are diverse and designed to appeal to both staff and freelance journalists with subjects such as How to ask for more money, What features editors want, Get your own column and How to write a bestseller! Panellists are senior women (and occasionally men) in the industry. The seminars begin and end with a glass of wine and plenty of time for socialising.
The WIJ summer and Christmas parties are also extremely popular and provide more valuable networking opportunities between members and their guests. Events have also been held in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Newcastle and Birmingham.

The Aims of Women in Journalism are
to:
Support and encourage women who work for magazines and newspapers; champion
and recognise women’s achievements and contributions to the industry;
