Scottish Women in Journalism is an informal group, there to
put women journalists both in touch with each other and in the picture about
what's happening in their industry.
We meet every couple of months in a social setting, sometimes just down the
pub, but sometimes in peoples houses. Two of our most popular events are the
Burns Supper in January and the Midsummer Nights Dinner in June. Both have a
special atmosphere because they've been held in the homes of prominent Scottish
journalists: Katie Grant, columnist for the Scotsman and writer of childrens
books; and Joan Burnie, the Daily Records columnist and agony aunt and a Scottish
icon!
Between meetings we exchange information and comment via e-mail. Contributions
should be sent to the current secretary, Jean Rafferty, at: jeanrafferty.fireopal@btopenworld.com
Telephone: 0141-613-2669.

TALK ON BERLUSCONI
Monday 25th April, 7.00 pm, room 213 (Lecture Theatre) St Andrew's Building, Glasgow University
Talk: "The Italian Anomaly: Silvio Berlusconi and media control in Italy." A presentation and discussion by Anna Battista, an Italian journalist working and living in Glasgow. Silvio Berlusconi is the President of the Italian Council of Ministers, the richest man in the country, the owner of a publishing empire and three private TV channels. As Prime Minister, he also retains the power to exercise a remarkable influence over RAI, the Italian public TV station. There are other strong media conglomerations in many countries all over the world, but the combination of media and political power represented by Il Cavaliere is a unique case, often described as "the Italian anomaly". The talk will briefly introduce the figure of Silvio Berlusconi and analyse issues such as media pluralism and political censorship in Italy.

WAGING PEACE
Journalist Rebecca Tinsley has set up an organisation called Waging Peace which works on behalf of peace and human rights all over the world. It's an all party lobbying organisation, running campaigns and targeting MP's on issues that often get ignored in the midst of domestic politics..
The current campaign is on the continuing tragedy in Darfur. On April 11th and 12th the World Bank and UN are holding an international donors’ conference in Oslo where they will raise nearly £5 billion to rebuild Sudan. The money comes with no strings attached, and a mild suggestion that Khartoum should make progress towards a ceasefire in Darfur.
Basically the government of Sudan are being rewarded with £5 billion for finally signing the peace deal with southern Sudan’s rebels (allowing the development of Sudan’s oil reserves).
Anyone who wants to protest about this and other issues should log on to www.wagingpeace.info

NUJ AND SCOTTISH PEN JOIN FORCES
The NUJ and Scottish PEN, the writers' organisation, are in the process of setting up a pilot project to go into schools.
The project aims to give craft skills to young people and to inform them about the work that is being done all over the world in supporting writers who stand up against repressive governments.
Four schools have been targeted for the initial project and it is hoped that they will be able to establish links with schools in other countries.
Through exploring the situation in a particular country we hope to make them see how important freedom of expression is in all modern societies.
We are looking for trainers, so anyone who is interested should contact Jean Rafferty at jeanrafferty.fireopal@btopenworld.com or call her on 0141-613-2669.
Teaching material will be provided and some training will be given before the project starts
